To get the most out of any fundraiser, everyone participating needs to give their all from beginning to end. This includes your team members, parents, coaches, and other volunteers so show some enthusiasm to set yourselves up for success.

Make it enjoyable to be a volunteer or a participant. Remember that they’re giving up their free time to help so if at all possible reward them for their time with recognition and thanks.
During each stage of the process, plan fun things to do that will reward everyone. You will keep your participants and volunteers eager, willing and interested in the next fundraiser, if you make your fundraising event a rewarding experience for everyone involved.
Make sure they remember the fun, with positive association not just the hard work.
Use incentives and rewards
We’ve seen a Cream Pie Attack party set up for all sellers or participants reaching a certain goal more than once. Have a fun day by doing the unexpected and making it memorable. Give key organizational figures an opportunity to do funny things for meeting organizational goals. We could include extreme examples such as shaving their heads or dyeing their hair blue, but the use your creativity and include the input of those involved to increase interest and engagement. Some safer, less long-lasting examples might include wearing a wig, dressing like a unicorn, risk the dunking booth, and so on.
Be creative and use ideas that are appropriate to your group. Kids and adults love these types of incentives, they don’t cut into your hard earned proceeds and can encourage community building.
Document with fun pictures
Everybody loves pictures. They make us feel something. They make us laugh, cry (hopefully happy tears) and remember. Take plenty of candid shots. Have everybody pose and ham it up for group photos. Be sure to post them where everyone can enjoy them. You could even reward your picture posers with prizes for the brightest smile, the silliest pose, or the craziest dressed.
Again, be creative and… make it FUN!
Ask volunteers to take pictures throughout the process for a variety of photos and you can be sure that everyone will be included. If possible, have a “movie” or slide show made of your group during each phase of the fundraising process and then show the movie at a wrap up event.
Show your appreciation to all levels of your organization and supporter base. Be sure to do fun things that aren’t fundraisers.
For example, line up discounts on tickets to athletic events, go on group outings, provide goodies for volunteers during working sessions.
Give out fun merchant prizes
Work with local merchants developing partnership to cross promote for great prizes that mean the most to your group. Work deals for dinners, movie passes, merchandise discounts, gift certificates, miniature golf, or even physical products for your top performing members.
As always, make sure there is something in it for the merchant (recognition at a minimum), otherwise you are just another stranger begging for their money or services.
Build in goals
Do an event based solely on having fun. Have key organization members commit to doing crazy things once certain revenue goals are reached, in whatever increments are most appropriate for your group and goals. Make a plan where the lead beneficiary or team lead does the ultimate “fun thing” as a reward to the group for all of their support.
Blend fun, food and fundraising - celebrate your wins
You can blend fun into even the most traditional fundraising events. Create an opportunity for your team to come together and build a community feel, to share ideas and update progress. Make it a potluck or provide one of your incentives to the team from a supporting partnership if you have ask their permission.
Build this into your plan from the beginning and when the benchmark is reached your team can celebrate their win.
Create fun competition activities
These will motivate your sellers and volunteers as much as winning actual prizes, maybe more. Think about low cost fun events that you could tie to completing certain tasks, for example: Top sales group gets a water balloon fight, all volunteers play in an egg toss, or an ultimate Frisbee match.
Say thank you
It’s as simple as that. Say thank you. Show gratitude. You can’t say thank you often enough to your supporters, your participants and volunteers. Show your appreciation with honest and heartfelt words and deeds.
Have a team party
Have a team party for all volunteers and participants at the conclusion of your fundraiser.
Get together at someone’s home, in a hall or on locations where everyone bringing potluck or an event that is sponsored by a local partnership. It’s a nice way to build goodwill and reinforce a sense of community for future recruiting and promote other community organizations if at all possible as well.

Remembering to put the fun in fundraising is the key to a successful, engaging and fulfilling experience for everyone involved in your event. Just keep in mind that each activity, prize or reward should be age and group appropriate.
Also, remember the other volunteers; parents and other adult volunteers that plan, support, communicate and implement to make it all happen. Be sure that they are rewarded directly, even if it is a simple thank you or recognition in a newsletter or post.
One idea would be to print simple awards on the computer and present them at your wrap up event. Individualize and personalize each one: “The Ultimate Organizer Award”, “The Worker Bee Award”, “The Head Head Honcho Award”, and so on.
